Computing characters of a group using characters of factor Groups: preliminary results.

Abstract: 

In this talk, we report some preliminary results on computing characters 
of a finite group G using characters of a factor group G/S where S is a
solvable subgroup. In particular we talk about the possibility of
computing characters of the group GL(n,Z/p^mZ) using characters of the
general linear group GL(n,p). As a main result we show how the problem can
be reduced to the case that S is a central subgroup of order p.
