For
readers who are not academics, I should explain that I am not related to any of
these individuals, in the usual sense of blood relations. Rather, everyone who
receives a doctorate normally has an advisor for his or her research. The list
of "mathematical ancestors" simply traces this chain of research
advisors beginning with my advisor, J. Vaaler. So H.
Diamond was his advisor, and P. Cohen his advisor, etc. The second list shows
several of the Ph.D. students of my advisor, so they are my "mathematical
siblings."
