Email gpaluck@sfu.ca Textbook: No required text. For those who would like to have a Maple reference text I recommend Understanding Maple by Ian Thompson which is available for download from Cambridge University press for US $18. It gives detailed explanations for how Maple works and includes lots of examples. Course website: http://www.cecm.sfu.ca/~mmonagan/teaching/MACM204F17 [ I will post Maple handouts, assignments and solutions there. ] Assessment: 5 assignments (50%), Final exam (50%) Assignments should be printed and handed into dropoff box #3 Final exam: Sunday December 10th, 7:00-10:00pm, Room AQ 3144 About the course. ================ The course teaches you how to use a mathematical software package Maple to explore calculus and study mathematical models and perform mathematical experiments. We will use Maple for calculus in one variable, two variables, for graphing functions, curves, surfaces, sets of points, etc. We will learn how to model physical systems with differential equations and use Maple to solve them and visualize their solutions. We will also see the LinearAlgebra and GraphTheory packages. The course will also strengthen your programming skills by writing programs to run a variety of mathematical experiments that involve programming simple loops and using arrays. Maple ===== - All assignments and the final exam will be done in Maple. - Maple is available in the assignment labs, open labs and library at SFU but I recommend that you buy a copy so you can use your laptop. - You can buy Maple for $75 + taxes from Maplesoft ( http://www.maplesoft.com ). Go to Maplesoft's web store at https://webstore.maplesoft.com and use the promotion code: AP76814-3D44A which saves you $25. This is the full version of Maple which you can keep indefinitely. - Instruction on the use of Maple will be provided by the instructor in the lab (AQ 3148.1) on Wednesdays. You must attend the lab. - Help for Maple commands and operations is available from inside Maple. A set of Maple notes is available on the course website for reference. - You can ask me for help with Maple in my office - please bring a memory stick with your Maple worksheet on it so that I can correct it with you. Cheating Policy =============== - Do not copy another students' work or copy solutions posted on the internet or elsewhere. If you do, you will get zero for the entire assignment. - Do not give your assignment solutions to another student. If you do, and they copy them, you will get zero for that assignment. - Please do not post your solutions on the internet. If you do and I catch you I will give you zero for all assignments and recommend to the university that you receive a "fail for academic dishonesty" on your transcript.
